Electronic music has become the cornerstone of British rave after the 1990s, but rave has had a bad reputation. Despite the individualism and popularity associated with rave, it has been prohibited by certain governments, as a public safety hazard. Not to mention cases of raver deaths and the overuse of drug, the sexualized atmosphere marks the electronic music festivals infamous.

The costumes, for female raver especially, are sexualized. “If the early underground Midwestern house-music parties and club-kid scene was largely about giving repressed kids a safe space to be themselves, the now-mainstream EDM scene seems to be about giving girls from the suburbs a chance to show off their butts.” There have been criticisms about the changing rave culture. While raving used to be for a minority group to appreciate the beauty of the music, it is now about creating a stimulating environment for attendees to hook up with others by dressing sexy and attractive. Indeed, walking through an electronic music festival scene, we no longer see the iconic phat pants and midriffs of the early 90’s. Instead, most ravers have decided to show off more skin.

Other than costumes, fashion for EDM includes infant soother that relieves teeth clenching- a side effect of a common drug in the raving scene. Thus the teeth soother is more of a tool to get high, rather than expressing individualism. Overexcessive bare skin and sexualy functional clothing have indicated the clothing style for raving as a way for self-indulgence. The question remains on how much of the raving fashion actually reflects individualism.
